Sony already dominates the console gaming market with its line of PlayStation consoles. They decided to venture into hand-held gaming as a natural extension of the line. To compete with Nintendo's Game Boy family of hand-held gaming devices, Sony released the PlayStation Portable or PSP. The latest generation PSP, the Sony PSP 3000 is slimmer, faster and more powerful.
Like its predecessor, Sony PSP 3000 utilizes the hand-held design similar to a game controller as well as the usage of UMD discs for games and movies. It has the same standard configurations like earlier PSP models and a similar 4.3 inch 480 x 272 pixel count screen. The only upgrade made to the screen in this version of the PSP is its increased brightness, contrast, and wider color gamut. Sony has also improved its AV output for video and game play when plugged into a TV and installed built-in Skype with the use of an on-board microphone. The rest remains unchanged.
The graphics on the Sony PSP 3000 are slightly better due to the less reflective screen of the new PSP. Game-play on this PSP remains unchanged. It's entertaining and the output AV ability, turning your PSP into a portable PlayStation is a bonus point. Compared with the PSP 2000, colors on the PSP 3000 look more lively and vibrant. However, the high screen refresh rates drain battery life considerably. That's the downside of the newly improved resolution.
The Sony PSP 3000 is a great new edition to the PSP family but there's not much difference in terms of hardware. Those who already own a PSP 2000 will find it unnecessary to upgrade to PSP 3000. First-timers who are looking for a light, slim and portable gaming console however will find the PSP 3000 a great buy.
